Thistle Dew Dessert Theatre, with KTDT-  DR (Digital Radio), is always creating a series of rib-tickling funninesses, laughably moving wacky slap-sticks, side-splitting comedies, dramatic action-packed jocularities, hilariously electrifying stories of mayhem, humorously riveting absurd monologues and short plays.

"Butler and I traveled to the Gobi Desert a few years ago.   There were rumors of a desert mole with huge haunches.   Descriptions were unbelievable, mostly because they were lies. Anyhow, we didn’t find any moles, but there is a big ass camel that runs wild in the Gobi.   We hired a guide and servants, all that jazz.   I saw the damn camel!    Saw it through my binoculars!   Boy, oh, boy did it ever have a huge rump!   I actually started salivating!" ....

(An eighteen-year-old Asian girl, MITZI (MYUNG- SOOK, mm-yung-sook) enters humming the popular tune she is listening to on her cd player plugged into her ears.   She is carrying an easel, a folding stool and a bag with other artist’s equipment.   Her hair is brilliant red, a sign of cultural defiance, and she is dressed in the defiant fashion of the day: hip hugging jeans and a short tank top and sunglasses.)

1. MITZI:  (Humming a Korean tune.)   Mmmm-mmm-mm.  (At the sight of the old man she screams.)   Igo-sun Ol-ma-im-ni-ka!  (Old fool!)   Old fool!   You scared the crap out of me old man.   What are you doing?   What the hell are you doing up here, on my roof?   Don’t you know we’re five stories up?
2. FYVUSH:   Of course I know we are five stories up.  My mother and father owned this building for more than forty years.   Long before you were born.   I grew up on these walls, young lady. This was my playground. Tevi and I used to play on this roof. We used to ... (pointing along the wall) to run around on ....

1. (Lights down, MITZI freezes at her easel, as FYVUSH at the age of 10-12 years, runs along the top of the building’s walls.   He is joined by a young TEVI.   They cavort playfully yelling and at those below and creating mischief.   As the lights come up they disappear behind the set and MITZI continues.)

1. MITZI: (Continues as if nothing has transpired on set.)   That was probably seventy-five years ago. How old are you?
2. FYVUSH:   You are right. I’m seventy-nine.   It was about seventy, seventy-five years ago.   We arrived on the boat from Germany in nineteen and twenty-eight.   I was still baby.   Two years.  Just in time for Depression.   How old are you?

1. MITZI:   Eighteen. (As she is setting up her easel and painting equipment.   She faces the Hudson River with her back to him.)   Well, you can’t stay here old man.   This is my “playground” now.   I need ....

1. FYVUSH: (Interrupting.)   I will be very quiet. You won’t know I am here. I won’t disturb you.
2. MITZI:   Yes, you will.  You don’t understand.   I need my solitude!   You, know, sol--i--tude.    Alone.   I can’t have anyone here spoiling my concentration.   Now get down before I call the super.

KTDT Digital Radio."  

Your friends and family could be listening to your radio adult or children's drama or comedy as performed by our own KTDT Players.  Yes!   If  you would like to write for radio, join our Saturday morning KTDT Radio Playwright Group.  The cost is $10.00 per each three-hour session.

2.   you submit your work to constructive criticism, 

3.   believe in my playwright rule, "writing is re-writing", 

4.   make a commitment to adhere to the concept of playwright/actor collaboration, and

My Mission: "How do words on the page become a living, breathing theatrical experience?   The goal of the Radio Playwright Group is to crack open the germ of the writer's words and to dissect it: tear it apart.  One of the best ways to investigate, discover, and analyze text is the dramatist/director's table talk session held prior to a good  play's rehearsals.   By taking the text into their hands, actors explore the elements of the writer's drama to discover characters, conflicts, chaos and confusions.  Borrowing this technique through readings and critique we will explore your work and challenge you to find a closer, more integrated and lively relationship to your narrative and dialogue.   As a writer, you will discover how your writing is best able to convey action, character essence, concept gist and conflict.   At the end of your encounter with this analytic process, as you are now a writer of vocal action, you will have created your own original writings, impulses, inspirations, dreams and visions.   Do you have a story to tell?"

Dialects for Actors and Voice Over Actors 

Saturday, Jan. 18th, 11-2pm

Thistle Dew Theater, 1901 P Street, Downtown Sacramento?

DIALECTS FOR VOICE OVER ACTORS is offered by our instructor:  Sacramento’s Premier Character Voice and Impressionist:  ED GYLES JR.  

Ed has been active in Northern California theatre for over twenty years.  He is an award-winning director and thrice-nominated actor.   His experience as a performer includes stage, film, television, radio and improvisation.

"Maybe you won't come out of the workshop sounding like Antonio Banderas or Julie Andrews....

But, you’ll amaze everyone at the auditions with your ability to impress them!"

Learn the basic accents: British, Spanish, New York et cetera! 

Be personally directed by Ed Gyles Jr.!

Your takes will be recorded and played back for the workshop (available on an .mp3 for $15)!

This is the first step in preparing for accent and dialect work, It will take many hours of practice for any one accent to come naturally.  But this class is a great start!

A psychologist walked around a room while teaching stress management to an audience. As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected they’d be asked the “half empty or half full” question. Instead, with a smile on her face, she inquired: “How heavy is this glass of water?”

Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz.

She replied, “The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my arm. If I hold it for a day, my arm will feel numb and paralyzed. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn't change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.”

She continued, “The stresses and worries in life are like that glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens. Think about them a bit longer and they begin to hurt. And if you think about them all day long, you will feel paralyzed – incapable of doing anything.”

Remember to put the glass down.
